Project Narratives and Precedents
How Chesa turns evidence into direction.
A Chesa narrative carries the working bridge between building evidence, client ambition, named precedent, and the decisions a contractor can hold in his hand. The narrative is written before the schematic. It is the first deliverable, not the last.

The role of precedent
Festen at Hotel du Couvent, Ruch in Zuoz, Peregalli in Lombardy, and Yovanovitch in Provence sit beside a project as judgment, not costume. We cite them in writing on the deal memo so the architect, the builder, and the family office are working against the same altitude. A precedent is a measuring rod, not a sample.
The role of language
A precedent line in the brief ("the bath under the vault, in the Festen register") protects a Calacatta cut at Henraux and a hand-troweled lime wall from drifting into a contract finish at month fourteen. The words on the deal memo are the line item that holds the spec.

Client ambition against building fabric
We hold an Engadin chasa against a Lombard farmhouse the family already owns, and let the second house edit the first. A Greenwich Shingle Style new build reads against the Engadin discipline the family lives by in February. The cross-reading is the brief.
Materials a contractor can hold in his hand
Hand-troweled lime, fumed oak, fieldstone in lime mortar, unlacquered bronze, ceramic stove tile. Every fixed line has a named workshop on it before construction drawings harden.

Writing the narrative before drawings
The conservation brief is the first deliverable, not the schematic. The narrative protects the schematic from being signed by a hand that does not understand the building. Call 917.502.9236 to commission a brief.

The precedent line
Festen at Hotel du Couvent, cited as judgment.

The deal memo
Precedent language that protects spec at month fourteen.

The cross-read
An Engadin chasa held against a Greenwich shingle.

The conservation brief
First deliverable; precedes any drawing.
